Street Photographers’ Rights
posted in Uncategorized |
The New York Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against the New York Police Department in an attempt to dissuade officers from detaining photographers and filmmakers who make images of the city's landmarks. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Arun Wiita, a 26 year old photographer, who was detained after an officer spied him photographing a Manhattan subway station. Mr. Wiita was detained for approximately half an hour and never charged with a crime. Police officials defended the stop as necessary for the prevention of terrorism.
